Physiotherapy for low back: how to prevent and treat back pain

Back pain is one of the most common causes of disability job-related and why some people miss work. It is also the second most common neurological disease in the United States, second place only to headaches. In fact, approximately 80% of adults in Western countries have, at some point, experience lower back pain.

For some people, luck, pain in the lower back can be resolved by itself or with the aid of medication within two to four weeks. But there are some cases of low back pain that can last more than a few weeks, in which case the condition is described as "chronic" and "progressive" which means it can only get worse over time.

In addition, 60-80% of these patients who suffer their first episode of back pain can feel recurrent pain in the year.

According to current research, there are certain muscles in the back working to stabilize the spine. When the spine or the back suffers an injury, these muscles are reflexively inhibited or shutdown. Worse still, these muscles are not spontaneously recover, and this is true even if patients do not feel pain and are able to return to normal activity level.

Following the inhibition of these muscles, called lumbar multifidi and transverse abdomen, lower back pain occurs. But there are steps you can take to prevent the same thing happening to you.

Back pain and physical therapy

One way to prevent inhibition of the lumbar multifidus and transverse abdominal through a series of physiotherapy.

Designed to strengthen the muscles of the lower back and keep the spine healthy, these physical therapy exercises can go back stabilization exercises Development of muscle strength and several variety of techniques.

In addition, a physiotherapist may also recommend methods such as heat therapy, ultrasound, massage, mobilization and education on posture and body mechanics to prevent low back pain recurrence.

Some of these approaches will be discussed later. You'll also find tips for self-help provided by experts to help you avoid back pain or prevent the condition from worsening.

However, before the head learn LBP is treated by physical therapy, it is important that we first understand the causes lower back pain.

Back pain: CAUSES

There are many types of back pain, but the most common is pain in the lower back. Why? You might ask. The reason is simple: you wear the most weight in your lower back. Thus, it is likely that a person would suffer pain in that area.

There is no question Final lower back pain. Sometimes, the causes of the condition are so complex that it is difficult to establish one.

However, professional therapists and other health care have found that back pain is often the result of tension in back muscles and ligaments due to one of the following activities:

Poor posture
heavy lifting
Sudden awkward movement
spasms
Stress

We could all be guilty of the above activities. We may not suffer any back pains now, but it is likely that as we get the pain and the degree of inhibition of the back muscles due to the increase in these activities, the back becomes a very distinct possibility.

In addition to these common activities, lower back pain can also result from specific conditions, such as:

Herniated disc (where the material disk presses on a nerve)

Sciatica (when a herniated disk presses on the sciatic nerve. This condition causes sharp, stabbing pain in one buttock and back leg.)

Spinal stenosis (when the space around the spinal cord and nerve roots becomes narrow. This is caused by arthritis and bone overgrowth, the pain resulting from a pinched nerve when received in the narrow space.)

Spondylosis (a type of arthritis affecting the spine due to degenerative changes caused by aging)

Spondylolisthesis (when a vertebra of the spine slips forward over another)

Lower Back Pain: TREATMENT

The treatment of low back pain depends several factors, including the type of lower back pain (if it is chronic or acute) and the alleged cause.

For example, a sharp pain in lower back is usually treated with painkillers, such as analgesics, or some forms of exercises that can help relax muscles.

On the other hand, chronic back pain or one that lasts for more than two weeks and is progressive may be caused by an underlying condition, during which The case of the treatment plan may consist of the resolution the underlying condition to treat back pain.

Back pain and physical therapy

Physical exercise is one of the most common treatment of low back pain. In fact, many home remedies for lower back pain consist of exercise, because the general theory is that if you stay active you stay healthy. This is true in most cases.

However, the purposes of this section, the exercises featured here will be those that are practiced by physical therapists to treat patients with low back pain.

Generally, in physical therapy exercises, the exercise program for back pain should include a set of stretching exercises, strengthening exercises, and low-impact aerobics. Read below to learn more about these exercises:

-Stretching

The Return of a person is composed of the vertebral column and contiguous muscles, ligaments and tendons. All these are designed to move in harmony with each other so that any limitation of range of motion in any of these elements result Back to back pain.

Stretching the lower back pain specifically targets soft tissues such as muscles, ligaments and tendons in the back and around the spine. By stretching, the spine and soft tissues are mobilized, increasing motion and thus relieve pain.

There are several types of stretching exercises used by physical therapists. The first is the hamstring muscle stretching that works for relax tight hamstrings, a common symptom of low back pain. This exercise is said to help reduce the intensity of pain lumbar patients.

-Strengthening

Physical therapists generally use two forms of strengthening exercises and back relief of pain, usually based on the express condition of the patient. These are the McKenzie exercises and dynamic lumbar stabilization exercises. However, both forms of strengthening exercises may also be combined if the therapist it is expedient to do so.

Exercises-McKenzie

Appointed from a physiotherapist in New Zealand, McKenzie exercises are primarily extension exercises that could help reduce pain from the disk space and can also help reduce the symptoms of herniated disc by reducing pressure on the nerve root.

For acute pain, the McKenzie exercises should be done frequently, at least once every two hours. In addition, patients are advised to avoid flexion, the spine during exercise.

Lumbar Stabilization Exercises Approach

Using this back exercise technique, the first thing a therapist does is to look for "neutral patient's" spine. It is the position that allows the patient to feel most comfortable.

Then, when the patient is in this position, the back muscles are then exercised to "teach" column spine how to stay in this position.

The execution of these exercises on a regular basis can help strengthen the back muscles and keep spine in proper position.

Low Impact Aerobic Exercises

The purpose of the exercise is low impact aerobics to rehabilitate back. Patients undergoing rehabilitation of the back through the low-impact aerobic exercise will have fewer episodes of back pain.

In addition, whenever an episode of low back pain does occur, the pain is less intense and lasts only for a short period.

A Another benefit of aerobic exercise low impact is that patients tend to remain functional is, they can continue their regular work and pursue leisure activities. In contrast, patients who do not experience the impact aerobic exercises typically low experience the progressive loss of functional capacity.

For aerobic exercise with low impact to achieve the desired results, they must be continuous. This will increase the heart rate and keep it high and increasing production of endorphins, hormones which are pain fighting published by the organization.

Here are some examples of low impact aerobic exercises you can try to mitigate or reduce back pain:

Walk-

One of the simplest forms of aerobic exercises, walking is generally regarded as very gentle on the back. For the maximum benefits of walking as a form of exercise low impact aerobics, walk two to three miles three times a week.

Stationary bike

This form of aerobic exercise less painful on back because it is lower impact produced. This is beneficial for patients with low back pain can find walking too painful.

Water Therapy

Sometimes referred to as aqua therapy, water therapy is simply exercising in water. The buoyancy is working to provide efficient air conditioning in the same time stress on the back is reduced.

Hiding my heart away- Brandi Carlile (with lyrics)

I made this video for Chrissy because she said it would be nice to have this song on youtube with lyrics :P

The first time I heard it was on Grey’s anatomy this week (I believe episode 5 of season 5). It was when they had the domino surgery for 12 kidney transplants at once. Anyways, so like yeah… I loved the song :D

Well, I hope you guys like it as much as I do =]

Lyrics:

This is how the story went
I met someone by accident
That blew me away
That blew me away

It was in the darkest of my days
When you took my sorrow and you took my pain
And buried them away, you buried them away

And I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known
You’ll disappear one day
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

You dropped me off at the train station
Put a kiss on top of my head
You watched me wave
Watched me wave
Then you went on home to your skyscrapers
Neon lights and waiting papers
That you call home
You call it home

And I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known
You’ll disappear one day
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away

I woke up feeling heavy hearted
I’m going back to where I started
The morning rain
The morning rain
And although I wish that you were near
That same old road that brought me here
Is calling me home
Is calling me home

And I wish I could lay down beside you
When the day is done
And wake up to your face against the morning sun
But like everything I’ve ever known
You’ll disappear someday
So I’ll spend my whole life hiding my heart away
And I can’t spend my whole life hiding my heart away

Toronto Raptors vs Atlanta Hawks Dec.11/07

T.J. Ford’s teammates said the Toronto Raptors guard was moving before he was taken off the court on a stretcher following a scary fall late in Tuesday night’s 100-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

Ford, who missed the 2004-05 season with Milwaukee following neck surgery, stole the ball and was headed toward a breakaway basket when Atlanta rookie Al Horford hit his face with his hand. Ford landed hard on his back, his head bouncing off the floor.

“After a while I could see him moving and that was a relief,” Toronto’s Chris Bosh said, adding there was immediate concern about Ford because everyone knew his injury history.

“It turns my stomach because of who it is,” Bosh said. “Like I say, we know about his situation and everything.

“He was conscious. He wasn’t trying to move too much. I’m sure he was feeling pain in his arms and legs. I just hope he’s OK.”

Raptors spokesman Jim LaBumbard confirmed Ford “had feeling in his upper and lower extremities when he was taken off the floor.”

Ford was taken to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Raptors director of basketball operations Marc Eversley and istant trainer Rory Mullin were with him at the hospital.

LaBumbard said it was expected Ford would remain at the hospital through the night.

Toronto coach Sam Mitchell reacted with immediate anger to the hard foul and had a brief exchange of words with Atlanta coach Mike Woodson.

“We’re just concerned about T.J.,” Mitchell said. “There’s not much more to say. We’ve just got to wait and see.”

Horford insisted he did not try to injure Ford, who had 26 points.

“Definitely not. I’m not a dirty player,” Horford said.

Horford said he was fooled by Ford’s move as he went up for the layup with 1:32 left.

“When it happened with a minute and a half left, we were still down by eight (92-84),” Horford said. “He got the steal. I just tried to go and block the shot. When he went up, I went up too. He tried to use the rim and I thought he was going to stay on (one) side so I went up and tried to hit the ball and I hit his head.

“He just made a good move and fooled me.”

Horford said he was alarmed by Ford’s hard fall.

“When I saw his head hit twice, that’s when I thought it was serious,” said Horford, who was ejected with the flagrant foul.

Bosh said it didn’t look like a dirty play by Horford.

“Al kind of mistimed it and hit him in his head,” Bosh said. “I don’t think he meant to do it on purpose. He was making a basketball play. He just got him right on his head.”

Woodson spoke with Mitchell after the game.

“I just went down there to let them know our prayers are with him,” Woodson said of Ford.

Players on both benches and fans were quiet as medical personnel attended to Ford.

“I’m a good friend of T.J.’s,” Atlanta’s Josh Smith said. “Knowing about the injury he had in Milwaukee, it kind of scared me. I started praying for him.”

Toronto led 69-68 entering the final quarter but stretched the lead to 82-71 before Marvin Williams, who had 23 points, finally ended Atlanta’s field goal drought with 7:30 left.

Joe Johnson also had 23 points for Atlanta.

The Hawks (10-11) were denied in their attempt to move over .500 after 20 or more games for the first time since 1998-99, their last playoff season.

Ford was 8-of-11 from the field and had 19 points as Toronto led 54-43 at halftime.

The Hawks cut into the lead with a strong third quarter but couldn’t continue the strong play early in the fourth. A three-pointer by Jose Calderon gave Toronto an 87-75 lead.

Bosh had 20 points and 13 rebounds for Toronto.

Smith fouled out with only five points and eight rebounds with 2:45 left, one night after having 25 points and 16 rebounds in the Hawks’ win at Orlando.

A layup by Smith gave Atlanta a 37-30 lead midway through the second quarter, but the Raptors closed the half on a 24-6 run for a 54-43 lead.

Johnson, who had only five points in the first half, made three three-pointers in the third quarter. A driving jumper by Acie Law at the end of the quarter cut Toronto’s lead to 69-68.

The Hawks tried to recover from their slow start to the final period. A three-pointer by Johnson cut Toronto’s lead to 90-84, but the comeback ended there.
