About a year ago i woke up with a stiff neck. That stiff neck lasted a year. I did a chiropractor a few times, physical therapy for 2 months, and none of that lead to improvements. I also had an x-ray and MRI done and each came back normal, with nothing too serious that could be spotted as the reason for my problem. Over the course of the year the pain ended up in my shoulders and upper back. So my neck, shoulders, and upper back were always stiff and uncomfortable. Earlier this week i had some blood work done and found out i had lyme disease. the doc said the amount in my blood was not marginal, it was a no brainer. The docs then said they couldnt tell how long ive had it and didnt think that this year long neck pain was due to the disease. Can anyone help me out?

I have a 2 year old neck injury and no insurance. It has ben good for a year. I’ve ben involved in high intensity usage, and have ben having pain in a finger on my left hand and in my left elbow. Sometimes it is numb, other times they ache, or the joints just lock up. Well, with the pain in my neck they sometimes harmonize pops, and or aches. Scoliosis – Is there a way for me to tell if a pain in my back is being caused by scoliosis?

I’ve had plenty of scoliosis tests since middle school & never was told I had scoliosis. I am 21 right now. A few years ago during a normal check-up my doctor told me I had Slight scoliosis. I didn’t really think much of it since I never had back problems. Just recently though my upper-back has started to give me pain…which I would have to say is coming from the spine.

Anyways, a few questions.
When the doctor told me a few years ago that I had slight scoliosis he also said that since I was basically done growing, it would probably never get any worse. How likely would you say it is that my scoliosis got worse? What would cause it to get worse?

Is there any way for me to figure out whether it is the scoliosis that is causing my pain? Best way I can think of is to simply wait a while & maybe try some kind of exercises to see if it gets better. (anyone know some good excises?)

I will see a doctor when I can, but I’m currently at college, away from home.

Well, most everybody has some degree of scoliosis, just some more than others. For some it never gets worse, and it never bothers them. I cannot believe that your doctor said that it would never get worse since you were done growing. If that were true, my 40 degree curve, that was found when I was 17 and a half, would have never continued to grow to the 58 degree curve it reached. With scoliosis, it most likely will continue to grow, which is why I had to have surgery. If I had not had my surgery, with the degree of curve I had, my back would have most likely continued to curve and one day could be pushing on my organs. It just gets worse with time. Since I was already done growing, a brace was not recommend for me, my spine would have just gone back to the way it was before I put the brace on. For me, I had horrible back pain. It was like the bones in my spine were aching. And for that, I found that 800 mg of ibuprofen once in the morning and once before bed, worked well for me. The only way to know for sure if your scoliosis has gotten worse is to get a chest x-ray, and have your curve remeasured. If it has, and it’s not too bad, your doctor will probably recommend Physical Therapy. I went to Physical Therapy for my back, and it didn’t help for me. With some it helps and with some it doesn’t. I did a lot of exercises for my lower back, which was where my pain was. I did a few for my upper back though, there was one where sat in a chair and put a stretchy band around a pole and pulled, that one was to help those upper back muscles. They had me on a treadmill. I did an exercises where I kept my back against the wall and squatted. They showed me the correct way to pick things up. They just have you do the exercises that are best for your particular situation. My best advise is for you to see your doctor, and probably to get into some Physical Therapy, and they can do a program that will help you best.
